The One-Handed Self-Adjusting Wire Strippers: Minim® & Maxim®

Minim Maxim Wire Stripper

From delicate telecom wiring to precision pole-climbing, from mission-critical aerospace cables to CAT6A, conductor prep has become an art form. The signals and locations where technicians are working mean that nicks from the wrong size slot (or twists from using unsized cutters) make the job difficult, if not impossible. In the shop, high-cost thermal and laser wire strippers meet modern needs but are not practical in the field.

The Price of Problems

Wire failures in aircraft or high-end computer servers can lead to enormous downtime expenses. Consider costs for:

  • Repairs
  • Crew travel to remote locations
  • Missed contractual deadlines
  • System failures due to small connector errors

A nicked conductor — or a cable that fails due to guessing proper stripping length because the conductor is exposed — can be the root cause of complex problems.  How challenging is diagnosing intermittent data transmission errors or grounding problems under time and cost constraints?

High current wiring can be compromised over time. Improper wiring operation in vehicles or other mechanically demanding situations can produce system failures. Proper and accurate wire stripping serves as the proverbial “ounce of prevention” that avoids cascading downtime and repair costs.

The Job Done Right On-Site

Quality wire strippers provide repeatable and reliable results. Consider the Maxim® 6 Ergonomic Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper. Because of its ergonomic handle and autoform stripping jaws, the stripper forms neatly around any radius cable, safeguarding the inner conductor from nicks. Since it features a built-in wire stop and can take round, oval and flat-wire cable, it is both versatile and reliable.

Some wire cutting and insulation removal tools provide only an adjustable cutting edge that relies on operator skill to make a minimal depth cut and twist to remove insulation. A series of standardized cutting channels might do the job, if

  • The right one is selected
  • The wire is perfectly centered in the channel
  • The operator is rested, skilled and patient
  • Working conditions are ideal

Those are a lot of conditional expectations; if anything is less than ideal with most cutters and strippers the field technician leaves behind wire damage, conductors of improper length, and bad connectors.

A Better Design

Advanced handheld wire stripping tools such as the Minim® 2.5 Self-Adjusting Small-Gauge Wire Stripper address all those issues by providing:

  • Self-adjusting blades
  • Simple adjustment of exposed conductor length
  • Single hand operation

Use is greatly simplified. The wire rests in place. Operation is fast, accurate and easy to repeat. Up a pole, where single-handed operation is a must, technicians appreciate the Minim®’s simplicity. Large-scale wiring jobs are much more likely to quickly pass testing and operate without failures in the long term.

All Wiring, Big and Small

Solar panel systems use high-current DC wiring. These large conductors are compromised by even small nicks. Data and logic systems with high density wiring make use of conductors as small as 30 ga. Such small gauges are difficult to handle and require highly accurate insulation removal.

Advanced wire stripping tools such as the Maxim® and Minim® handle these demanding wire installations. Technicians can avoid wire damage and replacement. The finished connections are reliable and strong, with the specialized wires spared stresses that could lead to breaks or fatigue.

Application Above All

More than ever, quality wiring is behind advanced applications:

  • High-end computing
  • Life-saving medical equipment
  • Airplane navigation systems

Wiring harnesses and other factory-produced solutions can use laser wire stripping and heat-based systems, but single-wire field repairs and installations are still predominantly done with mechanical tools. The Maxim® and Minim® advanced wire insulation removal tools are available to meet these needs confidently and securely.

The New EZ-RJ45® Crimp Tool

EZ-RJ45 Crimp Tool

Platinum Tools is proud to present the newly patented EXO Crimp Frame® and EZ-RJ45® Die as our new EZ-RJ45 Crimp Tool! Built to terminate the original EZ-RJ45 connectors, which have been a staple in the industry for almost two decades, this crimp tool improves the trim and crimping processes of EZ-RJ45 connectors by using a single cycle crimp and flush trim.

Like the EXO-EX Die, used to terminate ezEX-RJ45 connectors, the EZ-RJ45 Die is designed to lock connectors into place, seating them in the correct position for termination. The die is equipped with a hardened steel blade to trim the conductors flush to the face of the connector during termination. The hardened steel improves the life of the blade, allowing the blade to stay sharper and last longer between blade replacements.

The EXO Crimp Frame itself has ergonomic, comfort grip TPR (thermoplastic rubber) handles and a push button lock, to allow users to compress the handles and stow the tool for easy storage. The push button lock will keep the tool secure and compact in your toolbox, belt pouch, or pocket until the next time you need to use it.

Miswiring a connector costs time and money, so the EXO Crimp Frame has the T568A/B wiring sequence inscribed on the tool just below the die. This lessens the need to replace or rewire incorrectly wired connectors, and makes it easier for any job, large or small, to pass inspection.

Due to its die and tool design, the EXO Crimp Frame with EZ-RJ45 Die can be used right or left-handed, just remove the die and turn it around before re-inserting it back into the tool. The transition is smooth and easy, and it means that no matter what hand you’re used to crimping with, you’ll only ever need one tool to do it.

Sometimes Cat6 and Cat6A cables are too large to fit in standard EZ-RJ45 connectors. With its interchangeable dies, the EXO Crimp Frame with EXO-EX Die (P/N 100061C) will also give users the ability to terminate larger Cat6 and Cat6A cables with ezEX-RJ45 connectors.
